Beware of call centre jobs!
The call centre industry is no doubt to be one of the leading industries of the world now. Millions of new jobs are being generated in this particular industry and could be felt as a blessing for the developing countries like ours.
Economies of the south-east Asian countries are being benefited as there’s more foreign direct investment flowing in. European & American based multinationals are taking the advantage of low labor and operational costs at this part of the world and setting up their call centre customer services here. So it can be understood that it’s beneficial for both of the parties.
There’s a huge labor force ready at hand which is basically a semi-skilled force and waiting patiently fro jobs. With proper training the labor force could be a skilled one and on part of multinationals it’s quite nothing to train people here if they compare it with their costs of running and maintaining at Europe & America. That’s why the industry is growing so rapidly in
When anything new comes there’s craze about it and if its something like the growing call centre industry then its like just “O Ma God! I can work in a call centre for a renowned multinational with a lucrative salary! WoW!” Yeah its kind of okay to feel in that way, I’m not blaming it. However there’s few drawbacks of it and recently I worked at a call centre (now I’m out of it!:p) so let me share my experience with you.
The company first advertised at different universities around the city saying they are looking for people with fluency in English to work with them at a call centre which was sister concern of a renowned group of industries of the country (later we came to know that it was not a sister concern). An offer like that can’t be denied at the first place so I decided to give a shot at it. Interview was okay and three us got selected and was said that we would be getting a monthly basic salary of Tk. 9000 plus a bonus of monthly performance for working 4.5hrs a day 6 days a week.
The training was supposed to be of 7 days which became a 15 dayer later. We were told that we would get a sum of money for taking the training but later when we asked for it they said that it was for transport allowance and since they provided cars so nobody’s is getting that.(Note that 4 microbuses for 140 people!). Thing is that at first they didn’t tel us that it was transport money rather it was the training money.
The job started 15 days late and there were many days there were off days and the management didn’t notify me. I traveled to the other part of the city at my office and reaching there I came to know that there’s no office today for “technical difficulties”. So you can understand how I felt at that time.
When the job started we came to know that our salary is no more than Tk. 7500 instead of basic Tk 9000. So at the very first day of the job we three decided to quit. In the meantime we came to know through reliable source that the company doesn’t have proper license. And one day people from Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) raided the office to check for license.
We informed the office about our decision and we were told to bring our resignation letter the next day. So we went next day but there was no sign of H.R and we waited long at the office. This thing happened for a week and later he didn’t pick our calls even. It was like he was playing a game of hide and seek. ;p
That was unbearable on our part as everyday we had to travel a long distance to office and couldn’t get our job done. So we took some measures (obviously was not pleasant for the H.R. at least) and later the H.R. was convinced in some way and he accepted our resignation letter and we left.
So beware of fraud at this industry though it has greater prospects.
